The Rust Family

A special thank you and Merry Christmas! Thank you Sharon Rust, Rick Rust, K.C. Rust, and Calleigh (the pooch).  On Saturday, 12.4.10, the family met children at Ashwood Gardens and Nursery so that children could meet “Santa”.  Ashwood Gardens and Nursery is located off of Ashcake Road in Ashland.   All proceeds for the event were donated to Hanover Humane.  Ashwood Gardens and Nursery is owned by Terry Blair and her husband; they are both very supportive of Hanover Humane and great to...

Misty

Found a new home! Hi Beverly and HHS gang, we’re so happy to have Misty here at home with us! She’s been doing fine and is a real sweetheart. We decided to let her have a little place on our couch and have assigned her a blanket to sit on while she’s up on the couch. However, it appears that she prefers to tuck herself in under the blanket instead! She’s quite a character and is going to be a wonderful addition to our family! Thank you all so much for your help, Jessi Guest and...

I was rescued from the local pound, where I’d been left by my family. I’m about a year and a half old, and I’m very sweet. I have wonderful, medium-length fur and I enjoy being brushed. I do okay with other cats, so long as they are not too hyper. Because I am so timid, I’m fearful of small children and dogs. I am fully tested, microchipped, and vaccinated and eager to find a calm, quiet home. If you would like to meet me, please stop by the PetSmart in Mechanicsville on Saturdays between 11 AM and 3 PM, when volunteers are onsite to assist...

Abigail Padgett

Happt 9th Birthday Abigail! Recently, Abigail Padgett celebrated her 9th birthday with family and friends and honored Hanover Human’es furry people!  In lieu of gifts, Abigail, a pet owner herself, asked that she be given items for the animals with Hanover Humane.  Friends, family, etc. visited Hanover Humane’s web site for the “Wish List” of items brought gift bags bearing the pet-related items to Abigail’s birthday party.   As a result, Abigail was able to present Hanover Humane with many bags of dog and cat food, cleaning supplies, toys, leashes, kitty litter, etc. which will be used for all Hanover Humane’s foster animals.   In addition, Abigail received a number of cash donations which she provided to Hanover Humane.   Abigail and her family hope to volunteer with Hanover Humane so they can help the animals...

Dale Garrett

Happy 10th Birthday Dale! This young gentleman presented us with donations which were given to him in lieu of birthday gifts.  On March 20, 2010, Chip went to visit with Dale and his friends at his birthday party held at the Ozone in Ashland.  Chip did a short presentation for the children,  and then they all able to hold him and rub his head.  Chip adored the attention!  Dale came to the facility a few days later to pose for this picture and bring additional “gifts” with him.  During his visit, Dale played with Chip and took a tour of the facility. Dale thoroughly enjoyed his “double-digit”...

A Story of Hope

A Story of Hope

When King William county animal control rescued Hope in mid-February several years ago, they had little hope that she would survive. She weighed only 31 pounds and was anemic, malnourished,  and very dehydrated.  In fact, the poor emaciated creature so weak she was unable to stand.   Because some Virginia counties have limited resources and few links to rescue groups and humane societies to help them with the animals.  Routinely, Hanover Humane’s volunteers visit local shelters and pounds to find adoptable animals so they can be rehabilitated and find forever homes.    It was on one of these visits that Hanover Humane found the dog named “Hope.” After being hospitalized for a week at the King William Veterinary Clinic, Hope gained 7 pounds and,  though unsteady on her feet, was able to finally stand on her own. She received antibiotics, IV fluids, vaccinations, a lot of puppy food and many prayers. In addition to being near starvation,  Hope had several other health concerns which made her recovery questionable:  severe anemia and a severe case of heartworms.  Not to be daunted, her foster mom and dad provided Hope with much needed TLC; they doted on her!  Gradually, Hope began to gain weight and feel better; her fur began to grow back.  To our surprise,  Hope was a beautiful chocolate lab!   Hope continued to do well, but, due to the severity of the heartworms, the vet didn’t feel that Hope could withstand heartworm treatment.  Her only option was to be placed on monthly preventative and monitored for whatever time she had left. On April 3, Hope went to the veterinarian for a check-up. At 49 pounds, her white and red blood cell counts are normal and she is no longer anemic. Hope has a good disposition and Hanover Humane wanted to find her a home;  however, her overall health was still not assured due to advanced heartworm disease and its consequences. Because Hope had been through so much and had survived, she had a place in the hearts of each of Hanover Humane’s adoption volunteers.  One volunteer in particular, Miss Beverly, was deeply attached to Hope.   After several sleepovers to see how Hope would react to a new environment, Miss Beverly decided to adopt Hope.  Hope and Miss Beverly are very happy!    While we see Miss Beverly several times a week, occasionally Hope will decide to tag along so we can play with her and see how she’s doing.  We’re eternally grateful to Miss Beverly for giving Hope such a wonderful home, and, if Hope could speak, I’m sure she’d tell Miss Beverly that she loves her very much. In honor of Hope Hanover Humane Society has started a new special listings page called Hopes’s list. This page is dedicated for special needs animals like Hope that can not participate in our regular adoptions program. Please email all inquires to:...

Fable (a.k.a Bern)

Fable (a.k.a Bern)

Just wanted to give you all an update on Fable (Bern) who was adopted from the Mechanicsville PetSmart by us a few weeks ago!  Fable is doing wonderful and has adjusted to life at the Davis household!  He LOVES his other furry siblings (a tabby formerly named Cleopatra…now called Halo, adopted from VCC PetSmart last year, a Beagle and a Boston Terrier).  Fable is what we call a “ground kitty” and he prefers lying on rugs and pet beds versus getting up on the furniture like Halo does.  It’s not uncommon for me to wake up to see Fable lying on my husband’s chest purring up a storm and getting sleepy scratches.  His favorite thing to do is take our spot in the bed after we get up (since it’s all toasty for him already!!) for work in the morning.  He loves sunbathing and has recently begun cuddling w/our dogs.  He and Halo have taken to running around at top speeds like two horses right before bed time and play wrestling for several rounds.  Halo always wins.  We love our kitties and thank you very much for the opportunity to be their masters for a few years!! Thank you for all you do!...
