Our goal is to place our animals in a forever home with an owner who will be able to provide for them long-term.

Our applications are reviewed by members of our Adoptions Committee; the Adoptions Committee members are responsible for making decisions regarding adoption placements. All of our Adoptions personnel have full-time jobs so we ask your patience as we review applications.

Our adoption process involves the following:

Conducting residency checks

We check to see if the applicant owns their own home. If the property is rented, we validate that pets are allowed on the property by contacting the property owner or landlord. If pet fees/deposits are required, we validate that these have been handled before actually finalizing an adoption. If pet rent is required, we validate that the lease has been amended to incorporate the additional rent before actually finalizing an adoption.

Conducting veterinary checks

We need to ensure that felines and canines currently in the home and those previously in the home have been cared for by a vet. This involves contacting the vet office to establish an annual pattern of care for each animal.  In addition, we validate that each canine and feline animal in the home is spayed/neutered.  We also validate that each canine and feline is kept current on vaccines (distemper, rabies, and bordetella–canines only), canines are kept current on heartworm testing and are consistently on monthly heartworm preventative, felines are tested for feline  leukemia/aids (and are neg/neg), and that canines and felines are seen annually by the vet and as conditions require, etc.).

Contacting personal references

We will reach out to your personal references as part of our application review process.  We request that you provide contact information for individuals (who are not relatives) so that our Adoptions personnel can reach out to them as part of the application review process.

Generally, we allow seven (7) days for our personnel to handle the review of the application materials.   Throughout the application review process, our primary means of contact will be email.  As such, we ask that you add our email address, info@hanoverhumanesociety.org, to your list of contacts so our emails aren’t considered SPAM.

If your home is a good fit for the animal you’re seeking to adopt, a member of the Adoptions Committee will contact you to schedule a no-obligation meet-n-greet at the conclusion of the application review process.  If you are not contacted to schedule a meet-n-greet, please assume that an alternate setting was chosen and that the animal will not be placed in your home.
