Ashland Kiwanis Aktion Club Donation

aktion_club_group_photo_with_chip

On April 11, 2011, the Aktion Club, sponsored by the Ashland Kiwanis Club, had their monthly meeting at the Pole Green Community Center in Mechanicsville.   Aktion Club members organized a supply drive for the Hanover Humane Society and presented their donated goods to Hanover Humane at the monthly meeting.  In appreciation for the donations, members of the Hanover Humane Society provided the Aktion Club members with a presentation about the Humane Society's activities and introduced "Chip," a tiny Cairn terrier-mix to the members.   The members enjoyed hearing Chip's story of being born into Hanover Humane's adoption program the night his mother was removed from the pound.    Members enjoyed handling Chip, and Chip enjoyed the attention!   Shown here are the Acktion Club members along with Chip.  The Hanover Humane Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit entity located at 12190 Washington Highway.  Hanover Humane helps find forever homes for animals and, in addition to adoption services, offers education and prevention programs for citizens in Hanover County and the Richmond metropolitan area.

Happy 10th Birthday Campbell!

Campbell

Recently Campbell Whyte celebrated her 10th birthday with her family and friends.  Campbell had visited with Hanover Humane with her Girl Scout Troop, and she wanted to give back to the animals.  When her birthday arrived, in lieu of gifts, Campbell's family and friends gave her donations for the animals.  Campbell is shown here with some of her donations.   The animals were extremely pleased to get all these goodies!   The Hanover Humane Society is a 501(c) 3 non-profit entity located at 12190 Washington Highway in Ashland, Virginia.  Hanover Humane is committed to finding forever homes for the many dogs and cats in its adoption program.   In addition to promoting adoptions, Hanover Humane offers education and prevention programs to promote responsible pet ownership.

Chip__and_CMS_Animal_Lovers_Club_2-11On February 10, 2011, "Chip," a Cairn terrier-mix who was born into Hanover Humane's Adoption Program, visited with members of the Animal Lovers Club at Chickahominy Middle School.  Personnel from Hanover Humane gave a presentation to the members regarding Hanover Humane's Adoption, Education, and Prevention programs and answered questions that the young adults had.     All the attendees were then allowed to meet "Chip" and hold him!!

To show their appreciation of Hanover Humane and the efforts that it undertakes to help homeless dogs and cats, the members presented "Chip" with bedding, toys, and treats.  "Chip" is shown here with all the donated items.    This is the third year that Hanover Humane has visited with the Animal Lovers Club at Chickahominy Middle School and discussed animal care, welfare, etc.

On 1.22.11, a group of eleven Alpha Phi Omega members from the University of Richmond Chapter, undertook a service project at the facility.  The project, organized by Andrew Massaro, a senior at University of Richmond and Alpha Phi Omega's vice president and service coordinator, involved clearing brush and debris to extend our "Paw Paw" path.   (Mr. Massaro has a special interest in working with animals as he'll be attending Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in the fall of 2011.)
Mr. Massaro and his group of Alpha Phi Omega members made great strides on the path despite the 20 degee temperature outside, nearly doubling the length of the path!  The group was treated to hot cocoa and donuts for all their hard work!  The members had such a great time that they've scheduled two more dates to return to the facility and work on the trail again to remove additional debris, add gravel, etc.   Funding for he "Paw Paw" path was originally provided by Robert Bailie and family.  The "Paw Paw" path is used by Hanover Humane's personnel to exercise the dogs in Hanover Humane's Adoption Program.

Pole_Green_Elementary
January was "Caring for Critters" month at Pole Green Elementary.  To celebrate our furry friends, the entire school conducted a supply drive for items on Hanover Humane's Donation List.  The enthusiastic students collected 12 boxes of milk bones, 41 rolls of paper towels, and a variety of other items including cat toys and treats, dog toys and treats, gently-used linens, etc.  There were so many items that it took the efforts of the children and Humane Society personnel over a half hour to load all the merchandise into Hanover Humane's van!    The first graders won the "Caring for Critters" contest by collecting the most items!   Pictured here are some of the first graders who participated in this event.   As a reward for their efforts, the first graders will be able to meet "Chip," a small cairn terrier-mix in a presentation on February 8, 2011.  "Chip" was born into Hanover Humane's program and spends his time going to various speaking engagements where he talks about Hanover Humane, meets the children, and provides them with treat bags.   "Chip" always has a grand time, and the children love him!   Anyone interested in having "Chip" attend an event may email to  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
