When I met Yukon he was one of the Hanover Humane Society dogs housed at the Hanover Pound. He had been turned in by his owner for reasons unknown to us. Later he was moved to a Hanover Humane Society safehouse in Ashland, Va. Yukon is a great dog and we soon became buddies. I would take him to the Hanover Humane Society's adoption stand at PETsMART on Saturday mornings, trying to find him a good home. Later I started going to the safehouse and taking him jogging a couple times a week. He loved it and when hewould see me coming he would jump straight up in the air three or four feet again and again until I got to his pen. He would be so excited I would have a hard time getting a leash on him. The hard thing about working with adoption dogs is that sometimes you become too close to them and you can't take them all. Yukon is one of those dogs to me. Much time went on and many people looked at him. They said how nice he was and how pretty he was, but no one wanted to take him home. Then one day Linda, his safehouser found a young man that also thought Yukon was a great dog and wanted to adopt him. He took Yukon for a weekend trial and now Yukon has a permanent home. I was lucky to be able to see Yukon and say good bye to him. I also was able to take this picture of him with his new family. There are many "Yukons" in pounds and humane societies. Loving cats and dogs looking for good homes. All they ask is a little attention, care and love. For that they will be loving and devoted companions to their owner through the years. If you have room in your heart and your home for one of these animals please call or visit your local shelter or humane society. You may be saving an innocent life.
